The latest trends on *nixporn are tiling window managers, gaps between windows and rounded corners. So, the most used rice system to get a lot of ‘likes’ is using i3-gaps, a fork of i3 that provides gaps and, also, rounded corners for window rendering.
Tiling window managers are popular lightweight alternatives to full desktop environments like KDE or GNOME, they organize applications into a series of frames across the screen that do not overlap each other.
Ok, but what if don’t we mind about aesthetics but performance and technology?
Sway windows manager is the answer. According to the official website:
Sway is a tiling Wayland compositor and a drop-in replacement for the i3 window manager for X11. It works with your existing i3 configuration and supports most of i3’s features, plus a few extras. Sway allows you to arrange your application windows logically, rather than spatially. Windows are arranged into a grid by default which maximizes the efficiency of your screen and can be quickly manipulated using only the keyboard.Sway | swaywm.org
Sway is available in many distributions and you can easily install it.
$ sudo dnf install sway # for Fedora distro
$ sudo zypper install sway # for openSUSE distro
$ sudo apt install sway # for Ubuntu distro
Note: if your openSUSE version doesn’t provide Sway, you can one-click install it from this official Sway openSUSE software page.
If you are experienced with i3, you can upgrade to Sway because it natively supports the Wayland window protocol and it has a terrific performance. It also has the same i3 window control keys and everything is almost the same. Still, there are some differences, but you will feel immediately comfortable with it.
To get started with tiling desktop, a nice way is to use the i3 keyboard reference sheet, that helps so much or go deeper with a tutorial like Using the Sway Window Manager. To get inspiration and examples, you can check this *swayporn results.
