Activision Blizzard with Microsoft and Sony with Bungie, what a business! 2022 promises to be a
very important year for the Gaming industry and in January we heard the announcement of two
interesting market operations that have redefined the boundaries of the video game
sector.
The first – undoubtedly the heaviest and most influential – concerns the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, a move for almost 70 billion dollars that represents a record not only for the gaming world but for the entire history of acquisitions.
The second business – this more modest both for impact and for the money capital involved – is the one that led Sony to formalize the acquisition of Bungie, which will become part of PlayStation Studios for the modest sum of 3.6 billion dollars.

Bungie’s world-class expertise in multi-platform development and live game services will help us deliver on our vision of expanding PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers.
Bungie is a great innovator and has developed incredible proprietary tools that will help PlayStation Studios achieve new heights under Hermen Hulst’s leadership.
After the deal closes, Bungie will be “an independent subsidiary” of SIE run by a
board of directors consisting of current CEO and chairman Pete Parsons and the
rest of the studio’s current management team.Sony buying Bungie for $3.6 billion | gamesindustry.biz
“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the
Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the
studio to the PlayStation family,” said SIE president and CEO Jim Ryan.
The Gaming Industry’s Transformative Period
Early 2022 marked a pivotal moment in gaming history with two major acquisitions:
- Microsoft’s landmark $68.7B acquisition of Activision Blizzard
- Sony’s strategic $3.6B purchase of Bungie
The deal caps off a massive January for games industry acquisitions: Take-Two announced an
agreement to acquire Zynga for roughly $12.7 billion on January 11, and Microsoft followed up
with a $68.7 billion deal for Activision Blizzard a week later.
Bungie’s Journey with PlayStation
Since joining PlayStation, Bungie has maintained its promised independence while leveraging Sony’s resources. Key developments include:
- Continued multi-platform development
- Expansion of the Destiny franchise
- New IP development under PlayStation umbrella
- Enhanced live service capabilities
The PALO Project: What Happened?
We all know how much the Halo franchise has contributed to decreeing the success of the Xbox videogame platform and – precisely for this reason – there are already rumors of a possible alternative saga that will become exclusive to the PlayStation world.
The rumored “PALO” project (PlayStation + Halo) generated significant speculation in 2022. While the specific project never materialized, Bungie has:
- Continued Destiny 2 development
- Announced new projects (reference latest announcements)
- Maintained creative independence
- Expanded their development team
It seems that the project is already under development and that it includes both PvE and PvP activities, in short, a Destiny with a sprinkle of Halo and maybe even some elements of No Man’s Sky.
For the moment they are only rumors, perhaps not entirely founded, but the idea teases us a lot, and we hope that it can come true to delight players from all over the world with a new video game masterpiece.
