A new logo for the Fedora distro

January 10, 2019 cialu Technology

Let’s talk about the logo that the Fedora community is talking about and analyzing. I’m really too happy that the Fedora Project, one of my favorite Linux distro, is evaluating a new logo proposal.

Fedora was my first distro and I will undoubtedly be tied to her for the lifetime. It has served me faithfully every time on laptops, desktops, servers, and PIs. At this time, there are two proposals that have received greater care and interesting, they are further skimming and reworking of a long process to rebrand the old logo.

The new Fedora logo. From the idea to the design

The new logo idea started in a Fedora design ticket at the request of the Fedora Project Leader Matthew Miller and has been discussed openly in all the Fedora community channels.

Now, you can follow the new Fedora logo decision process on two main sources: #620 Explore Fedora logo refresh, the design ticket on Fedora PAGURE, and Which new Fedora logo design do you prefer?, the Máirín Duffy blog post.

Eventually, as all great design brainstorming processes go, you have to pick a direction, refine it, and make a final decision. We need your help in picking a direction. Here are two logo candidates representing two different directions we could go in for a Fedora logo redesign.

Máirín Duffy

In my opinion, I’d pick candidate#2, a strong rebrand in a minimalist sauce where is no longer feel of the classic logo. I guess I like it better because it seems really something new, I see candidate#1 more as a retouch of the old logo. But it’s only my two cents.

The Fedora Community would love to hear your feedback in order to iterate and push the designs forward. Why you like, don’t like, or whatever you think can help the building process of the new Fedora logo. Come on, say yours!
